Cockerton Band

"Brass at the Stute" with Cockerton Prize Silver Band - (remembering Shildon's own rich brass tradition)

Wednesday 9th October 2019

Entry £3:50

It's little known but two Shildon born brass composers produced around 500 pieces of music during the golden era of brass band music, and Shildon was once very much a brass band town, with a band contest being a key feature of the annual Shildon Agricultural Show.

We've invited Cockerton Prize Silver Band to be the first in a series of concerts to help bring a love of brass back to Shildon. Under accomplished conductor Andy Hunter they'll be playing a programme of music they have chosen themselves, but we may well hear a piece from our own George Allan, one time a member of this Institute before his death in 1930.

The Cockerton Prize Silver Band themselves have a fine story to tell going back to 1870 (which you can read about here) though they are very much a band of the 'here and now'.

We're running this concert with The Friends of The Wizard and Typhoon (the society remembering George Allan and Tom Bulch) who'll be on hand with information about their work in, and connection to, Shildon. please join us for this very special and guaranteed enjoyable evening of brilliant brass band music.
